Our honeymoon through Italy was a three-week journey filled with slow mornings, spontaneous stops, and an incredible mix of cities, hill towns, and coastal escapes. Traveling with our toddler added a different rhythm to the trip. One that encouraged us to slow down, linger longer, and appreciate both the iconic highlights and the quiet in-between moments. From Venice’s canals to the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, the golden towns of Tuscany, and the dramatic landscapes of Sicily and Puglia, each destination offered something completely unique. Looking back, it wasn’t just the places we visited, but the way we experienced them together that made the trip so unforgettable.

Arezzo

Arezzo was one of the biggest surprises of our Italian honeymoon and quickly became one of our favorite stops. The city’s golden stone architecture, rich history, and relaxed pace created a charm that felt both authentic and inviting. We were fortunate to visit during Arezzo’s famous monthly antique market, when Piazza Grande and the surrounding streets transformed into a sprawling treasure hunt filled with antiques, art, books, and unique vintage finds. Between browsing market stalls, stopping for espresso, and exploring local boutiques with our toddler, we discovered a city that felt effortlessly stylish, creative, and full of hidden gems.

Montalcino

Montalcino is a picturesque Tuscan hill town that feels tailor-made for wine lovers, with its winding streets lined with tasting rooms, wine shops, and stunning countryside views. While the town itself is small, its historic castle and sweeping vistas make it a lovely place to spend a few hours exploring. The highlight of our visit was a tour and tasting at Corte Pavone, where we learned about the winemaking process and enjoyed exceptional Brunello di Montalcino paired with thoughtfully selected bites. Surrounded by rolling vineyards and the beauty of the Tuscan landscape, Montalcino offered one of the most memorable and immersive wine experiences of our honeymoon.

Siena

Siena was a deeply nostalgic stop on our honeymoon, as it gave me the chance to revisit a city I had first fallen in love with while studying abroad years earlier. Exploring its medieval streets, the stunning Duomo, and the iconic Piazza del Campo alongside my husband and toddler made the city feel both familiar and entirely new. The slower pace of autumn allowed us to savor simple moments, from lingering over coffee to watching our son delight in the sights and sounds of the city. Rich in history, beauty, and family memories, Siena became one of the most meaningful and memorable destinations of our time in Tuscany.

Montepulciano

Montepulciano was a destination we approached with some hesitation, worried it might be overhyped, but it quickly became one of the most charming towns we visited in Tuscany. Its medieval streets, historic architecture, and welcoming atmosphere felt authentic and inviting, proving there was much more to the town than its reputation. A standout moment was an unforgettable lunch at Porta di Bacco, where exceptional food, thoughtfully paired wines, and warm hospitality made for one of our favorite dining experiences of the trip. Combined with the stunning views of the rolling Tuscan countryside, Montepulciano captured our hearts and left us wishing we had even more time to explore.

Atrani

Atrani may be the smallest town in Italy, but it left one of the biggest impressions on us during our honeymoon. Tucked beside Amalfi, the village offered a quieter, more intimate way to experience the dramatic beauty of the Amalfi Coast, with its winding alleyways, colorful buildings, and stunning sea views. We spent a relaxing half day enjoying coffee in Piazza Umberto I, exploring the charming streets, and watching our toddler play on the beach while we soaked in the peaceful atmosphere. Known as a filming location for Ripley, Atrani felt every bit as cinematic in person, combining breathtaking scenery with an authenticity that made it one of our favorite coastal stops.

Amalfi

By the end of our first week in Italy, we were already settling into the slow rhythm of the Amalfi Coast as we spent a relaxed afternoon exploring Amalfi after a morning in nearby Atrani. With our base in the hilltop town of Scala, we had driven down to the coast and parked between the two villages, allowing us to experience everything entirely on foot. Amalfi was lively even in November, from its bustling beach and colorful streets to the unexpected sound of an orchestra performing in the cathedral square beneath the Duomo. Between wandering the main street, enjoying fried seafood and gelato, and relaxing by the water with views of the dramatic cliffs, the day unfolded effortlessly into one of our most memorable coastal experiences.

Positano

We arrived in Positano early in the morning from our Airbnb in Scala, winding down the cliffs just as the town was beginning to wake up. Getting there before the crowds made all the difference, allowing us to easily park near Spiaggia Grande and enjoy a rare quiet moment on the beach with the pastel buildings rising behind us. We started the day with a relaxed brunch at Casa e Bottega, a bright and modern café that offered a peaceful contrast to the historic charm outside. As the town slowly filled with visitors, we spent the rest of the morning wandering Positano’s steep stairways, boutiques, and viewpoints, taking in the beauty of the coast before ending with coffee and cannolis by the water.

Matera

Our time in Matera was one of the most unforgettable stops of our Italian honeymoon, where we spent 2 1/2 days immersed in its UNESCO-listed Sassi district. Arriving with high expectations, we were still surprised by how quickly the city’s ancient cave dwellings and dramatic hillside setting felt both surreal and completely captivating. A guided tour through the Sassi offered a deeper look into Matera’s layered history, including preserved cave homes and churches carved directly into the rock. Beyond the tour, some of our favorite moments came from simply wandering the maze-like streets, where every turn revealed sweeping views, quiet corners, and a city that felt unlike anywhere else we had ever been.

Alberobello

Some of the most memorable moments from our honeymoon came from spontaneous stops like Alberobello, which we visited briefly while driving from Matera toward the coast of Puglia. Known for its UNESCO-listed trulli houses—whitewashed stone dwellings with cone-shaped roofs—the town feels like stepping into a fairytale, with narrow streets lined by some of the most unique architecture in Italy. Originally built without mortar so they could be dismantled to avoid taxation, these structures give Alberobello a whimsical yet deeply historic character that’s even more striking in person than in photos. Though we only stayed for a short visit, wandering the quiet streets and pausing for coffee and pastries in the main square made it one of the most unexpectedly special stops of our entire trip.

Ostuni

The drive from Matera into Puglia felt like a transition into a slower, softer rhythm of travel, and our quick stop in Ostuni—the famous “White City”—fit that feeling perfectly. Perched on a hill and surrounded by endless olive groves, the town’s whitewashed buildings glow in the sunlight, a tradition originally meant to reflect heat and help protect against disease. We spent our short visit wandering the maze of narrow streets and staircases, where every turn revealed another view of layered history and everyday life unfolding within the old town. One of our favorite discoveries was Sponda, a beautifully designed coffee and lifestyle shop that perfectly captured Ostuni’s blend of old-world charm and modern Mediterranean style, making even a brief stop feel unforgettable.

Lecce

Lecce completely captivated us with its incredible Baroque architecture. Often called the “Florence of the South,” the city is filled with ornate churches and golden limestone buildings that seem almost carved from lace. Even though it rained during our visit, we still had a great time exploring. We ducked into a cozy coffee shop for lunch during the worst of it and watched the city slow down outside. Once the rain eased, we wandered the streets again and appreciated just how beautiful Lecce really is. In the end, it felt like a city that rewards slowing down, noticing the details, and simply letting yourself get a little lost in its atmosphere.

Taormina

Our time in Sicily came at the end of our three-week honeymoon through Italy, and Taormina ended up being one of the most memorable stops of the entire trip. After taking the ferry from Calabria and driving along the coast to our boutique hotel near Catania, we dedicated our only full day in the region to exploring this iconic hilltop town. Taormina felt like a postcard brought to life, with its sweeping coastal views, charming pedestrian streets, and lively squares filled with cafés and boutiques. We spent the day wandering slowly, enjoying Sicilian treats like cannoli and granita at Bam Bar, and soaking in the incredible scenery from a park overlooking the sea before heading back to reflect on a place that instantly felt unforgettable.

Venice

As our Italian honeymoon was coming to a close, Venice provided the perfect setting for some of our final adventures together. Staying on the colorful island of Burano gave us a unique home base as we spent two days exploring iconic landmarks like St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, the Rialto Bridge, and the Bridge of Sighs. Between sightseeing, we enjoyed simple pleasures such as coffee and pastries in Cannaregio, fresh pizza near St. Mark’s Square, and gelato beside a canal while watching gondolas drift by. Despite the crowds, Venice completely charmed us with its timeless beauty, hidden corners, and unforgettable atmosphere, making it a fitting finale to our Italian honeymoon.

Milan

Milan was our final stop in Italy, and we only had half a day to explore after arriving by train from Lake Como, with our flight back to the States the following morning. We focused our time on the city’s most iconic sights, starting with the breathtaking Duomo and the surrounding piazza, before wandering through the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the nearby high-end shopping streets. The city felt especially polished and vibrant, with preparations underway for the upcoming Olympics adding an extra sense of excitement and care throughout the center. We enjoyed a relaxed lunch of pizza and pasta, followed by an afternoon cannoli and coffee—our last meal in Italy—soaking in every final moment before saying goodbye to our honeymoon adventure.

As we look back on our time in Italy, it’s the small, everyday moments that stand out just as much as the iconic landmarks—the coffees in quiet piazzas, the long walks through winding streets, and the unplanned stops that ended up becoming favorites. Each city added its own layer to the journey, creating a collection of memories that feel both vivid and deeply personal. Traveling as newlyweds with our toddler made the experience even more meaningful, turning a honeymoon into something fuller and more layered than we ever could have planned. Italy gave us beauty, history, incredible food, and unforgettable experiences—but most of all, it gave us time together that we’ll always be grateful for.
