A Dreamlike Stay in Matera: Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort

There are some places that stay with you long after you leave, and our time in Matera was exactly that, unforgettable. Known for its ancient cave dwellings and timeless atmosphere, this southern Italian city feels like stepping into another world. We wanted our stay to reflect that same sense of place, and Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort delivered in every possible way. Built into the historic Sassi, the hotel perfectly blends the raw beauty of Matera’s past with refined, modern luxury. From the moment we arrived, we were completely captivated, not just by the setting, but by the feeling that we were experiencing something truly unique and special.

Getting to the hotel was part of the adventure. Since parking isn’t allowed within the Sassi Zone, we left our rental car at a nearby garage just outside the area. From there, a shuttle was waiting to take us directly to the property, making the transition into this historic setting feel seamless and stress-free. Once we arrived, we were blown away, not only by our incredible cave room, but by the entire property. The rustic architecture paired with soft, neutral tones created such a calming and elevated atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why this ended up being Andrew’s favorite hotel of the trip. During our stay, we enjoyed an amazing pizza dinner at Più Sud, a relaxing room service lunch, and several lovely breakfasts from their other restaurant, Regia Corte. One of our favorite moments was indulging in the hotel’s gorgeous lunch spread out on the terrace just outside our room while Sage napped, it felt peaceful, private, and incredibly special.

Leaving Matera was bittersweet. There’s something about the quiet beauty of the Sassi, combined with the comfort and hospitality of Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort, that makes it hard to say goodbye. This stay wasn’t just about where we slept, it was about slowing down, soaking in the surroundings, and truly experiencing the magic of the destination. It’s the kind of place that invites you to return, to relive those peaceful mornings and golden evenings. We already know we’ll be back someday, and until then, this stay will remain one of the most memorable highlights of our trip.
XOXO
