Sage Wylder’s Three & Four Month Baby Update
I am finally sitting down to share Sage Wylder’s three and four month updates! As I mentioned in his one and two month update, the newborn phase was tough for me as a new, single momma. Every week gets so much better! Sage was a very serious newborn, but during months three and four, Sage started turning into this smiley, sweet, and curious baby boy. I have been loving these past few months with him and discovering his personality more and more. I feel like we have such a great connection and bond now which is so rewarding as a momma. He is such an amazing baby and I am so proud of him. Enough gushing, let’s get into the updates with tips and mommy must haves I loved as well!
Three Months
Sleeping
At three months, Sage was sleeping through the night from about 8/9pm to 8 am with one (occasionally) two dream feeds in the night. His night time routine didn’t change much from his two month night time routine (diaper change, sound machine on, zippered footie & swaddle, breastfeed, bassinet.). I did have to pack away his Comfy Cubs newborn swaddles and started using the Halo swaddle, all of which were given to us by my friend Elle who had used them for both of her babies! The Halo swaddle is really nice because you have the option to have their arms out or in the swaddle, although Sage sleeps better with his arms in the swaddle. I swear these swaddles were the trick to keep him sleeping through most of the night! He is still sleeping in the Baby Delight bassinet that she also gifted me which makes it so easy for me during night time wake ups and feeds.
Feeding
The constant feeds during the newborn stage have slowed down thank goodness. Sage breastfeeds about every hour or two, sometimes more sometimes less. In order to ensure my milk supply stays up I drink Milkmaid Tea from Earth Mama and taking a lactation probiotic from Pink Stork. I also started making sure that I was drinking enough water (I drink about 2 1/2 40 oz bottles a day, linking my bottle here) and eating more protein. I also use my Haakkaa silicone breast pump a few times a day, which helps stimulate milk supply as well!
Mommy Must Haves
I have a few mommy must haves when it came to our travels that I want to share! Our Baby Delight bassinet has been the perfect travel bed for Sage. It folds up small enough to fit into a checked bag! I’ve used it both times that we flew up to Eastern Washington to visit Sage’s dad. I took it with us to Oregon and Colorado as well and it’s so easy to set up and take apart which is really nice. My Ergobaby Embrace Baby Carrier has been such a must have as well. It’s the perfect way to carry him without my back hurting and he loves taking naps on mommy in it. We couldn’t have done our travels without it. I also absolutely love our car seat & stroller combo from Cybex! You are allowed to take a car seat and stroller when you fly so we would check it plane side which made it so much easier to get through major airports. Our car seat also reclines which is amazing for naps or long stretches in the car seat as well.
Sage Loves
I would say Sage just loves being with mom! Breastfeeding, playing, being carried around. Now that he is smiling, these activities feels so much more rewarding. I love doing anything to make him smile! He loved taking naps on mom, but I did start transitioning him into napping on his own on my bed or in his crib.
Sage Doesn’t Love
This month, Sage did not love being in his car seat one bit. I had to learn a few tricks to keep him entertained in the car which includes funny noises/faces, a pacifier, a toy, and milk in one of his Boon Nursh bottles. I usually sit in the back with him while my mom drives but if I have to drive him somewhere by myself, it’s usually bad news lol. He still does not love tummy time, any version of it, which I was starting to get a little concerned about because the goal at this age is about 40 min. It was also really hard to get any tummy time in during our trip which was over 3 weeks so that was hard.
Four Months
Sleeping
At 4 months Sage started going through a sleep regression which unfortunately is common at around this time. He went from only waking up one or twice in the night to 3-5 night time wake ups, very reminiscent of the newborn stage! We were also traveling for three weeks during 3 1/2 months to 4 months and the inconsistency didn’t help much. Let’s just say mommy wasn’t getting much sleep during this time! Sage grew out of his 3-6 months Halo swaddle so I switched him to the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit that my friend Elle had also given me. It seemed to help for the first few nights but then he was back to an average of 3 wake ups at night. It doesn’t help that the suit is thick and my parent’s keep the house so hot, not great for baby sleep… I may need to switch back to a swaddle sleep sack or I have also been thinking about trying out the Dreamland weighted sleep sacks!
Feeding
During month four, I started feeling like my milk supply was wavering a bit. I don’t think it was, I think what I was experiencing was that the super full/swollen feeling of my breast during those first few months started to soften which I recently learned was normal. During our travels I definitely wasn’t drinking enough water or eating right, it’s just hard to do when you are traveling, so I felt a lot more depleted. Now I’m really trying to focus on more protein intake because I am just not getting enough in my regular diet. I’m focusing on high protein snacks like Chomps beef jerky sticks, string cheese, protein shakes and bars. I also want to try adding an amino acid into my supplement routine!
Mommy Must Haves
I finally got around to setting up Sage’s Baby Delight baby bouncer that my friend Tonya gifted us and it has been such a great addition! He’s still to small to make it bounce on his own but he likes it when I bounce him in it and it’s so nice having somewhere I can easily put him for a few minutes so I can take a shower, etc. while he is still in my eye sight. I’ve started reading and singing to him as part of his night time routine after either a bath in his Lalo bath tub or a towel bath depending on the day. I can tell he really likes that part of his night and I know that’s going to become even more of a special time as the months go by.
Sage Loves
Sage loves “face time”, especially when I make silly faces and sounds at him. He squeals and smiles at me. I actually got my first giggle last week while I was doing a weight training workout with Sage as my weight lol. I recently started trying to work that into my workout routine twice a week, along with 3-4 days of running to help me lose the extra 10 pounds of pregnancy weight. I got another giggle when I was changing his diaper a few days later! He loves it when I get animated while changing his dirty diapers, he thinks it’s so funny. He also seems to love working out with mama! I recently started running 3-4 days a week and doing weight training with Sage 2-3 times a week with a mama/baby work out. He laughs and smiles whenever I lift him in the air!
Sage Doesn’t Love
Although tummy time is still not Sage’s favorite, I am so happy to say that we worked our way up to about 45-60 min of it a day (the goal at 4 months is around 60 min). I really tried to make sure to squeeze in 10 min or more during every wake window, which really paid off and helped Sage build enough strength to enjoy it a bit more, with the help of constant entertainment with his Lovevery toys. He doesn’t not love it when mom isn’t there, he would scream his head off and bat the toys in his play gym if I wasn’t in sight for most of the month, although he seems to be getting over it a bit now. He still doesn’t love bath time either lol! We only do about 2 baths a week and I give him a “towel bath” with a wet cloth the other days which he does love. He smiles and giggles the whole time!
Sage is now grabbing his toes which is so adorable! He’s also getting so much better at grabbing objects. He is still not rolling yet without help from mommy during tummy time. He recently started screaching allll the time. It started out as a cute little yell and it has gotten louder and more frequent as the days go by. Nothing is wrong, I think he just like’s hearing his voice and testing how loud he can do it lol but I hope it doesn’t stick haha! It has been so amazing watching him change and grow everyday though I know it will always be bittersweet. I’ll check back in with a five and six month update soon!
