There’s no shortage of beautiful places to visit in Tuscany, but after spending three weeks exploring Italy on our honeymoon with our toddler, a few destinations stood out above the rest. From medieval hill towns and world-renowned wine regions to vibrant antique markets and historic city centers, each place offered something completely unique while still capturing the magic that makes Tuscany so unforgettable. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a family adventure, or your first trip to Italy, these four cities quickly became some of our favorite stops and are places we would recommend without hesitation.

Montalcino

Montalcino is a charming hilltop town in Tuscany known for its deep connection to wine, with streets lined by wine boutiques, tasting rooms, and scenic views. The town’s historic castle serves as a centerpiece, offering visitors the chance to enjoy local wines while overlooking the surrounding countryside. One of the highlights of our visit was a tour and tasting at Corte Pavone, where we learned about the winemaking process and sampled exceptional Brunello di Montalcino paired with delicious bites. Although small and heavily wine-focused, Montalcino’s beauty, rich wine heritage, and stunning Tuscan landscapes made it one of the most memorable stops of our trip.

Montepulciano

Montepulciano was one of the biggest surprises of our Tuscany trip, exceeding every expectation and quickly becoming one of our favorite destinations. Its medieval streets, historic architecture, and authentic atmosphere felt charming rather than touristy, making it easy to see why so many travelers love it. A standout moment was lunch at Porta di Bacco, where exceptional food, thoughtfully paired wines, and warm hospitality made for one of the most memorable meals of our honeymoon. Combined with breathtaking views of the rolling Tuscan countryside, Montepulciano captured our hearts and left us eager to return.

Arezzo

Arezzo was an unexpected highlight of our honeymoon, combining historic charm, beautiful architecture, and a relaxed local atmosphere. We were fortunate to visit during the city’s famous monthly antique market, when hundreds of vendors fill the streets and transform the town into an open-air treasure hunt. Between browsing antiques, exploring boutiques, and stopping at cozy cafés, we discovered a side of Tuscany that felt creative, authentic, and full of character. More than just a beautiful destination, Arezzo left us dreaming of future visits and quickly became one of the places that felt most like home.

Siena

Siena was a beautiful blend of nostalgia and rediscovery, offering a completely different experience from my first visit years ago as a student. Visiting in the fall with our toddler allowed us to slow down and appreciate the city’s quieter side, from the iconic Piazza del Campo to its winding medieval streets and historic charm. The city’s stunning architecture, including the striking Siena Cathedral, provided a breathtaking backdrop for simple family moments that became some of our favorite memories of the trip. Siena reminded us that even familiar places can feel entirely new when experienced through a different season of life.

Looking back on our time in Tuscany, these four cities each left a lasting impression for different reasons. Arezzo surprised us with its creativity and charm, Siena felt timeless and deeply meaningful, Montepulciano won us over with its authenticity and incredible food, and Montalcino offered an unforgettable immersion into Tuscany’s legendary wine culture. Together, they showcased the diversity of the region and reminded us that some of the most memorable travel experiences come from slowing down and fully embracing a place.
