8 Desserts You Can’t Miss in Portland, Oregon
Portland is the hipster land of bridges, bikes, and the best desserts! If you are planning a trip to Portland then I have the perfect list of ice cream, donut, and cupcake shops to add to your itinerary. If you are a sweet lover, like me, than you are going to love these spots! You can’t go wrong with any of these delicious treats.
Blue Star Donuts
Blue Star has been serving gourmet donuts to the Portland area since 2012. The French brioche dough and frosting are made fresh everyday with high quality ingredients. They offer a wide array of unique flavors. To name a few, there’s the Blueberry Bourbon Basil, the Sweet Potato Frittata, and the Matcha Latte. My favorite flavors are the Horchata and the Chocolate Ganache; I’m a sucker for anything chocolate or glazed! The donut pictured below is the Blueberry Bourbon basil, a must try.
Ruby Jewel Scoops
The heavenly smells wafting out of this ice cream shop reels me in every time! Ruby Jewel’s fresh ingredients are sourced from local farmers and artisans in the Pacific Northwest. One of the treats you absolutely cannot miss is the ice cream cookie sandwiches. My favorite is the Caramel with Salted Dark Chocolate squished between two yummy chocolate chip cookies. Insanely delicious and very rich! You really can’t go wrong.
Saint Cupcake
Saint Cupcake offers gourmet cupcakes made with great quality, seasonal, and locally-sourced ingredients which are made from scratch everyday. They are more than than just a cupcake shop; they also serve delicious cake, pies, scones, brownies and more. The options are endless! My favorite cupcakes are Velvet Painting and Birthday Cake. The cupcake pictured below is the delicious Birthday Cake. The frosting is deliciously thick and creamy and the cake is moist and perfect. I’m a huge fan of Saint Cupcake.
Voodoo Doughnuts
Voodoo Doughnuts is one of the iconic locations that gives Portland so much character. Take one step inside their doughnut shop and you will see why! Voodoo makes delicious cake doughnuts, raised yeast donuts, and fried doughnuts. They are known for their fun toppings which include cereal, Oreos, M&Ms, and bubblegum. My favorite is the “Dirt”; a doughnut covered in vanilla frosting and crushed Oreos. If I am craving something even sweeter, I will opt for the “Dirt” covered with peanut butter. Talk about a sugar rush!
Salt & Straw
Salt & Straw is a local favorite with the yummiest ice cream flavors! They offer a wide range of flavors with unique combinations of ingredients like Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper and the Pear and Blue Cheese. My favorite flavors are the Freckled Woodblock Chocolate and the Cinnamon Snicker doodle. I love to order these two flavors combined in a split-scoop. Occasionally I’ll switch it up, but this combo is just too good!
Wiz Bang Bar
Wiz Bang Bar, a soft serve dessert bar, is an extension of the popular ice cream shop Salt and Straw. They serve delicious sundaes, soft serve ice cream, hand dipped cones, and chocolate tacolates. Wiz Bang Bar is located in the Pine Street Market. Pictured below is the vanilla soft serve dipped in chocolate. This cone was on special the day that I bought it, but usually they are sold in larger sizes; the more the better! The chocolate tacolate was sprinkled with sea salt and had yummy vanilla ice cream inside.
Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai
Pip’s is a casual coffee cafe specializing in (to die for) mini donuts, which are made fresh as you watch. If you are a chai lover, like myself, they have an amazing Chai Flight that comes with six different flavors. With flavors like honey sea salt, cinnamon sugar, and Nutella sea salt, you can’t go wrong. My favorite flavor is the Dirty Wu which is cinnamon and sugar drizzled with raw honey, warm Nutella, and dusted with sea salt. It’s sinfully delicious!
I’ve never been to Portland, but I’m going to save this list for whenever I make it over there. YUM!
I hope you do visit someday Melissa! 🙂
I don’t live anywhere near Portland, OR, but if I visited there one day and had a sweet rush, I would probably opt for Blue Donuts. I too like glazed chocolate donuts! Yum….Do any of these donuts have fillings in them, by the way? I LOVE donuts with pastry fillings the best, besides the chocolate frosted ones.
They do have a few with fillings Patricia! You would love them 🙂

I think I just gained a few pounds reading this. Yummy. I am not a fan of doughnuts, but the rest is quite attractive. Had I read this before our visit to Portland last year, my first stop would have been to get one of those ice creams: Caramel with Salted Dark Chocolate squished between two yummy chocolate chip cookies
