Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month With My Son

A day late, but I still wanted to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with my son, Sage! My mother is from Colombia and moved to the U.S. when she married my dad. My abuelita was my nanny, and I spoke Spanish before I spoke English. My mom took us to Colombia many times throughout my childhood to visit family, which helped me develop a strong connection to my Colombian roots.

Growing up, I was often told I was “white” because my dad is Irish and Italian. Sometimes, those comments came from other Latinas, which made them especially confusing and hurtful. I felt such a strong connection to my Hispanic heritage, and it was hard when others didn’t see or understand that part of me. As an adult, I’ve learned to embrace and take pride in who I am, my roots, and the things that make me unique. I plan to raise both of my boys to do the same! I’m proud to be Colombian.
