How to Spend 24 Hours in Seattle
I decided to take a last minute trip to Seattle for the weekend with my sister Rocio and our friend Jensyn. Jensyn had only been to Seattle once before, so we wanted to hit most of the major spots! We stayed with my parents who have a boat docked in Seattle near the space needle. To avoid driving and parking around the city, we took the monorail from the space needle to downtown. It was only $5 round trip! The first spot we hit was the infamous gum wall.
What To See
Gum Wall
The Gum Wall is a brick wall covered in chewing gum in Post Alley, located under Pike Place Market. There is a staircase at the left hand side of the market near the fish vendor, that will lead you down to it. The city actually had to scrape down all the old gum a year or so ago because there was so much of it, so the Gum Wall had to be started over. It’s a fun spot to stop by and leave your mark! ;P
Pike Place Market
Pike Place Market is an iconic tourist attraction in Seattle. I never get over the big neon signs! It was labor day weekend when we visited so the market was packed. We quickly stopped by the flower vendors then headed down to the lower levels of the market to explore the shops. Two of my favorite spots down there are the BLMF Literary Saloon, a bookstore overflowing with books, and Holy Cow Records with it’s amazing view of Elliot Bay. After checking out the stores, we walked down Post Alley and made our way towards the pier from Pike Place Market.
Jensyn and I browsing through the Friendable app! Jensyn and I became friends earlier this year but when I first moved to Portland, it was hard to make new friends. It would have been so nice to have an app like @gofriended back then! Friended is about being yourself and having real conversations. It’s free to download and you can get the first week of premium free! Download it now and start making friends 🙂
Pier 69
Pier 69 on the Elliot Bay waterfront, has amazing views of the bay and of downtown Seattle behind it. It’s a great spot to sit and watch the boats, ferries, and cruises that leave from the docks. Pier 69 offers a ton of tourist attractions like Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Ivar’s, a carousel and more. I love admiring the giant ferris wheel on the pier. One of these days I’m going to buy a ticket!
Smith Tower
Smith Tower, only a 15 min walk from Pier 69, has been on my Seattle bucket list for awhile now because of it’s amazing views of the city! Smith Tower is full of history which we got to learn about as we walked through the exhibits leading to the elevators. I love history so I found the information super interesting! After wandering through the exhibit we took the elevator to the observatory. The observatory is an open-air deck with a stunning 360-degree view of Seattle. I absolutely loved experiencing this new view of Seattle! Tickets are $19 for adults but you can save 10% if you buy them online. You can purchase tickets here.
Capitol Hill
I always stop by Capitol Hill on trips to Seattle! It’s a fun neighborhood with lots of hip shops and restaurants to explore. My favorite shops to visit are Everyday Music and Elliot Bay Book Company. What can I say, I love books and records! We snapped a quick pic on the rainbow sidewalks before heading back to Portland. On trips where I have more time to explore, I like to walk through the historic mansion district on Capitol Hill, visit the plant observatory, and stop by General Porpoise Doughnuts for my favorite doughnuts in Seattle!
Where To Eat
Oddfellows Cafe
Oddfellows Cafe is an american eatery located on Capitol Hill. Every time I’ve visited, the food has been amazing and this time was no different! We stopped in for brunch and shared the Eggs Benedict with Roasted Potatoes, the Brioche French Toast with Mascarpone, and Granola and Yoghurt. All of the dishes were delicious! The interiors of a restaurant are just as important to me as the food and the rustic feel at Oddfellows does not disappoint. I love the antique American flag hanging on the wall at the entrance! If you get the chance, check out the back patio through the restaurant, it’s so cute!
Mr. West
Mr. West is a modern cafe bar located downtown on Olive Way. I love the interiors at this restaurant! It’s the perfect mix of mid century modern and contemporary. We sat at my favorite spot in the restaurant, the grey booth on the back wall. I love the open shelving and knick knacks on the wall at this spot. We shared the Avocado Toast, the Almond Butter Toast, and a chocolate croissant. My favorite was the Almond Butter Toast!
There are so many more things to do in Seattle that we had to skip this time! Check out my Seattle Travel Guide for more spots to check out. We had such a fun time in Seattle! Have any of you ever been? I would love to know your favorite spots!
