How We’re Swapping Toxic for Non-Toxic in Our Home

Andrew and I recently watched The Plastic Detox on Netflix, and honestly, we were shocked by what we learned, especially about how microplastics can impact our health. We’ve always tried to be intentional with how we live. Clean beauty, sustainable products, and healthy eating have been important to both of us since we first met, so we felt like we were already doing a pretty good job. Our home was filled with non-toxic cleaning supplies, organic foods, and we avoided things like synthetic perfumes and conventional deodorants. But this documentary opened our eyes in a completely new way, and as parents, it hit even deeper.
It made us realize how many hidden sources of toxins were still part of our everyday routines, things we hadn’t even questioned before. And when we think about our toddler, Sage, and the children we hope to have in the future, it feels even more important to do better where we can. Especially now that we are trying to get pregnant with another baby! That’s when we started making small, intentional swaps. We traded out our plastic toothbrushes for wooden ones, switched to wood cooking and cleaning utensils, and started using compostable food storage bags instead of plastic. I’ve also made the decision to only purchase natural fiber clothing moving forward, things like cotton, wool, and linen, so we can avoid the synthetic materials that often contain microplastics. These changes might seem simple, but together they add up and reduce what we’re exposed to daily. We’re definitely not perfect, and there are still so many things we want to slowly replace over time, but we’re learning that this doesn’t have to be an all or nothing journey. It’s about progress, not perfection.
We’re still at the beginning of this process, but we already feel good about the direction we’re heading. Creating a less toxic home isn’t just about us anymore, it’s about building a healthier environment for Sage and for our future children, too. It’s something we’re committed to doing together, step by step, in a way that feels realistic and sustainable for our family. I wanted to share this with you in case you’re feeling inspired as well, whether you’re just starting out or looking for new ideas, there are so many simple swaps we can make to create a safer, healthier home for all of us.
XOXO
