Portland’s Best Coffee Shops II
I promised more coffee, so more coffee is what you’ll get! Case Study Coffee, The Society Cafe, and Upper Left Roasters are all really fun spots to get your fix. Let me give you the low-down on these gems. If you are a coffee lover, keep your eye out for the next installment!
Case Study Coffee
I mentioned this cute coffee spot in my Alberta Street Guide post! I love the Alberta location with it’s beautiful wooden-bar and teal-tile backsplash. The mid-century modern interiors are really beautiful. There is seating on the main level of Case Study Coffee, but they also have a really cool loft area (up the stairs) where a lot of people sit and work on their laptops. Their lattes, my drink of choice, are delicious!
They have two other locations; 1422 NE Alberta St and 5347 NE Sandy Blvd. All of the locations are perfect with their classic interiors and contemporary light fixtures. Fun fact: the light fixture hanging from the ceiling at the Alberta location is in the shape of a caffeine molecule!
The Society Cafe
Located in the lobby of the Society Hotel, this coffee spot is a total gem! The Society Cafe is also a lounge and bar that serves coffee, fresh pastries, beer from local breweries, and some of the best wine in the Chehalem Valley. I really love their chai latte; it’s not too spicy and not too sweet. It’s just perfect! The lounge is very roomy with sofas and window seating. I love the blue/grey cabinetry, marble counters and tables, and the wooden accents.
The best part about this location is that you can sip your drink from the top of the Society Hotel! Just ask the concierge and he will escort you to the elevator. They have an amazing view of the city from the rooftop. I’d love to go back during the summer with friends to enjoy some wine with a view! The Society Cafe is really close to the Lan Su Chinese Gardens and the Tom McCall Waterfront Park if you want to play tourist.
Upper Left Roasters
New to the Hawthorne area is the super classy roastery and cafe, Upper Left Roasters. I always love finding great coffee spots where I can also get some yummy brunch! Upper Left Roasters serves their own espresso and delicious toasts topped with goodness like the “Spelt”; avocado, poached eggs, and pepper. There are tons of tables and bar seating to visit with friends over some great coffee and brunch.
I love the way they’ve decorated! The cafe has a chic industrial feel with concrete floors, a light wood bar and tables, and white accents. I love the orange and white light fixtures and white wired seating. Upper Left Roasters is already a very popular spot!
The case study coffee shop looks vibrant and cool. I know it’s a coffee shop but do they have alternative drink for people that can’t tolerate coffee due to caffeine?
They serve several varieties of tea as well Saidat! I am a tea lover too 🙂
I haven’t been to Portland yet but I can’t wait to try out these coffee shops once I get there! Thanks so much for the tips!

Portland seems to be one of the most interesting cities in the US, and I’d really love to visit one day. These places look really cute, and even though I don’t drink coffee it would be nice to just have a cup of tea there and chat with a friend.
It really is pretty unique Nina! I hope you do visit someday 🙂
Oh my gosh all these beauties! I want to check them ALL out. I live in a small town, and while we just got a second coffeeshop, I would LOVE to have these around to spend an afternoon in!
I grew up in a small town! I do love that about a city 🙂
It looks like you have so many great places on hand! I am yet to find my perfect coffee place in Cheltenham where I live….my dream place would be an independent bookshop/coffee house – maybe I should open one!
Hahaha, you should Tiffany! 😉 Is Cheltenham in England?
The Society Cafe definitely looks like my kind of place! I love airy and bright cafes. If I ever end up in Portland, this will be on my go-to list without a doubt!
