Sage Wylder’s One & Two Month Baby Update

I thought it would be fun to share updates for Sage Wylder’s first year of life! I got a little behind so I’m sharing month one and two together. The first month was a little tough as a new mom, but as the weeks went by, it got better and easier! It’s a little rough being thrown into taking care of a baby for the first time and I definitely had to learn a lot, especially because all babies are so different! Sage has always been very good at communicating his needs (lol!) and I feel like I know him so well now. We have a really good routine down now which is so essential for me as a work from home, single mom. I can’t believe how quickly he is growing and developing, it’s very bittersweet. I am a very proud mama!

One Month

Sleeping

The first month of Sage’s life, especially the first few weeks, were definitely hard on mommy! I’ve been breastfeeding Sage on demand since he was born, but those first few weeks, they want to feed practically every hour. He would sleep a lot during the day with a few wake windows for feeding and “play”. When it was time for bed, a sense of dread would wash over me, because I knew it would be another sleepless night of breastfeeding and diaper changes. I was very sleep deprived to say the least, postpartum depression, and healing from my c-section. Thank goodness for the bedside bassinet (similar) that my girlfriend got me otherwise it would have been very painful for me to get pick him up and put him down all night. I also swear by the Frida Baby 3 in 1 Sound Machine, more so for me because it helps me sleep!

Feeding

As I mentioned, I have been breastfeeding Sage on demand, which is constant in those first few “newborn” weeks. Something that really saved my nipples (lol!) and gave me a little bit of a break in between feeds was the Haakaa my girlfriend also gave me. I would store the extra “let down” during my feeds in the fridge so that either I or my parents could give it to him. That was the only way I was able to get a shower during that first month! I would definitely recommend one of those. I’ve used that exclusively as a breast pump. Sage was in the NICU for the first 4 days of his life and even though I would go there every 3 hours to breast feed, they had to give him a bottle of my extra milk in between visits. I think because of that, he’s always taken either bottle or breast happily! The bottles I love are the Boon Nursh bottles. I got a set for my baby shower with 3 sizes with different flows as well so right now I’m using the smallest size with the slowest flow. I love that they have caps so you can take them on th go too!

Mommy Must Haves

The bassinet I mentioned above and the Haakaa silicone breast pump were definitely life savers! I would also recommend the Earth Mama nipple butter. I used that after almost every feeding in the beginning but now that my nipples are tough, I only put it on after I shower. I also recommend the Earth Mama Milkmaid Tea and the Pink Stork lactation probiotic for breast milk production. Anytime Sage had gas, I would give him the recommended dosage of the Natural Remedies Gas Relief drops. Those have saved us during a few melt downs!

Sage Loves

Since the very beginning, Sage has been a happy eater who loves to breastfeed and be close to mommy. He preferred taking naps on me during the day, but would occasionally sleep in his Snuggle Me Lounger. He was very alert right away, always looking around. He loved looking at windows, ceiling fans, and the framed art in my parents house. He was already tracking the black and white contrast cards from his Lovevery kit at just two weeks! He also loved listening to me sing, hearing music, and being swayed or walked around the house for a “tour”.

Sage Doesn’t Love

Sage did not love being set down, he always preferred to be held! He definitely didn’t like getting the snot sucked out of his nose (still doesn’t lol). Steaming in the bathroom with the shower on helps! I would definitely recommend the Frida Baby NoseFrida. He also didn’t like getting his nails clipped! I would chew them off at first while he was sleeping but that became impossible. I use the Frida nail clipper from the Ultimate Baby Kit to trim them. He had his first bath after his umbilical chord fell off at about one month. He did not like baths at first!

Sleeping

At two months old, Sage now wakes up only once or twice in the night to feed, usually between 2-4 am and around 6 am. Each week leading into two months got easier as I started learning some “tricks” that really worked well for Sage and I. He always wants to breast feed a ton in the evening which helps him sleep through the night. For our bedtime routine, I change his diaper, turn on his sound machine, put him into a zippered footie & swaddle, breastfeed him until he is mostly asleep, then set him in his bassinet. This swaddle makes it so easy and it really keeps him asleep for a long period! During the first month and leading into two months, I would have to rock him in the bassinet while he sipped on a bottle of breast milk until he would fall into a deep sleep. Now at two months, he will skip the bottle a lot of the times. I repeat the feeding process during the early morning feed. He still prefers to nap on me, but I can now get him to sleep in his lounger or on my bed with a bottle of breast milk and/or pacifier.

Feeding

Now that Sage’s wake windows are longer, I am feeding him about every 2 hours, sometimes more/less. His “play” sessions are longer (I love the Lovevery play gym & kits). I let him breast feed on demand for as long as he wants. If he get’s fussy, it’s usually because it’s time for a nap or he is about to poop lol. I use my Haakaa almost every time I breast feed so that I can give him a bottle of it in between. His longest feeds are first thing in the morning and during his early morning night time feed.

Mommy Must Haves

I could not have gotten anything done without my Solly Baby wrap or Ergo Baby carrier! As a full time content creator who is self employed, I didn’t get to have a maternity leave, so these baby carriers were crucial for me.

Sage Loves

Towards the end of 2 months, Sage started batting and kicking at the toys that hang in his play gym. He loves to ring the bell the most, I think he sometimes hits it to get mommy’s attention lol. He also loves “face time”. He smiles when I or my mom make faces at him. He also likes to be propped up on our legs for face time. He started smiling and “talking” more towards the end of 2 months which I was super excited about. I really feel like we are connecting so much more now! He now enjoys bath time too. He still loves being carried and walked around or carried in his baby carriers.

Sage Doesn’t Love

Sage is not a big fan of side lying and especially not tummy time! He got a little better at tolerating it towards the end of 2 months thankfully. He doesn’t like being restrained in his car seat. My mom comes on errands and drives so I can sit in the back with him to give him his bottle or pacifier. Sometimes he will fall asleep but if he wakes up alone, forget about it!
