Wandering the White City: A Quick Stop in Ostuni, Italy

The drive from Matera into Puglia felt like a shift into a slower, softer kind of travel. On our honeymoon road trip through southern Italy, with our toddler along for the adventure, we made a quick stop in Ostuni, the famous “White City.” Set up on a hill and surrounded by olive groves, the whole town seems to glow. The whitewashed buildings aren’t just beautiful, they were historically painted with lime to reflect the heat and even help protect against disease. We didn’t have much time, but it didn’t take long to see why people love it here.

We wandered through the old town, letting ourselves get a little lost in the narrow streets and staircases that seem to twist in every direction. Everything felt layered with history, shaped by centuries of different influences, but still very much alive. Traveling with a toddler meant we moved slowly, which honestly made it better. We noticed more, paused more, and took it all in. One of my favorite finds was Sponda, a coffee and lifestyle shop that completely surprised me. It felt so thoughtfully designed, and the second floor had this small boutique with clothing, ceramics, and beautiful home pieces. It had such a cool, modern Mediterranean feel, and I didn’t expect to find something like that in Puglia.

Even though it was just a quick stop on our way to our boutique hotel, Ostuni really stayed with me. There’s something about those white streets, the light, and the little unexpected moments that makes it feel special. It was a reminder that even short stops can end up being some of your favorite parts of a trip.
